Plastic Impregnation (PI) Technology

Plastic impregnation (PI) is the process of injecting a polymer material between the inner & outer strands of a steel wire rope rope.  This process enhances the longevity of our ropes by reducing the friction between the internal & external strands, increasing bend fatigue resistance & core stability.

The impregnation process is completed at the time of manufacturing through extrusion ensuring optimal coverage and fill between the strands.

Improved durability & wear resistance.

The primary goal of plastic impregnation is to improve the durability, wear resistance, and corrosion protection of wire ropes. The introduction of plastic into the rope reduces internal corrosion for the wire rope core and helps maintain the structural integrity of the rope by keeping the strands in place preventing internal movement that leads to premature wear.

Advantages of plastic impregnated ropes

  • Improved corrosion resistance - The plastic layer prevents water and corrosive substances from penetrating the core of the rope.
  • Reduced internal friction - The plastic material reduces friction between individual strands and the core, which can significantly reduce wear over time. This leads to smoother rope operation and a longer service life.
  • Improved stability - PI ropes like our Dyform 34LR & Dyform 6 ensure the stability of the rope, allowing for better load distribution and reduced bending fatigue. This is particularly beneficial in applications where the rope undergoes frequent bending or flexing.

Extend rope life further with Bristar®

BRISTAR ropes construction reduces sheave wear and point to point loading, which combined with the superior dynamic structural stability provided by the Bristar core, ensures exceptional performance.

  • Highest performance construction
  • Greater internal rope protection
