Storage of Wire Ropes

It is important that wire ropes being stored are adequately protected from the environment, windblown debris (sand, shot blast grit, etc.) and any hazards within the vicinity which could damage the rope. Care must also be taken to store/protect ropes from welding activities.

Fibre Core vs Steel Core for Crane Wire Ropes

The first steel wire ropes were produced with natural fibre (sisal, hemp, jute, etc) cores and operated on cranes and winches with rope drums of sufficient diameter and width to accommodate the required length of rope on a single layer. This single layer spooling arrangement minimised the possibility of the rope being crushed and hence wire ropes with fibre cores gave a satisfactory performance for many years.

Rope Lay & Direction Type

Steel wire ropes are regularly referred to as being left or right hand lay and being ordinary/ regular or Lang’s. More recently the direction and type of rope lay has been referred to using a combination of the letters S and Z, which has been new to some rope users. The direction and type of lay is an important feature of any stranded wire rope and determines key rope characteristics e.g. fatigue, wear, crush resistance, etc. and can affect the safety of the different ropes in-service. This bulletin aims to provide background information to support the user when selecting a type of rope lay for an application.
